Comparative Study of the Library websites of IITs, IIMs, AIIMSs in India: A status report

Purpose: The study aims to examine, compare, and evaluate the content and services provided through the library websites of IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS in India. It focuses on how effectively these websites provide useful information and meet the needs of their users.
Methodology: The study examined the library websites of 23 IITs, 20 IIMs, and 13 AIIMS between May 1 and July 2, 2024. Data were collected using a six-point checklist covering General Information, Collections and E-Resources, Library Services, Library Sections, Links and Navigation, and IT Applications and Web 2.0 Tools.
Findings: The results show that IIT library websites performed better overall than IIM and AIIMS websites. IIT Gandhinagar ranked first among the top 25 websites with 84 points, followed by IIM Kozhikode with 80 points, IIT Delhi with 78 points, IIT Kharagpur with 77 points, and IIM Ahmedabad with 74 points. The study also found that IIM and AIIMS library websites have considerable scope for improvement in their content, services, and web-based facilities.
Implementation: The findings can help academic libraries improve their websites by providing updated information, better access to electronic resources, user-friendly navigation, online library services, and interactive Web 2.0 tools. IIM and AIIMS libraries, in particular, can use the identified gaps to improve their websites and provide more effective and user-centered digital library services.
