Integrating Latest Technology in Academic Libraries: A Systematic Review Using the PRISMA Method

Purpose: This systematic review synthesizes recent evidence on the adoption and application of emerging technologies in academic libraries, with a special focus on the Indian and IIT context.
Methodology: Following the PRISMA framework, relevant studies (2015-2025) were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore using combined search strings covering AI/ML, XR, IoT, cloud computing, RFID, big data analytics, and chatbots. After de-duplication and rigorous screening, 29 eligible studies were analyzed through a structured evidence matrix.
Findings: Publications have increased significantly since 2019, with most appearing in Library Philosophy and Practice. Research predominantly employed quantitative survey methods, while qualitative and implementation studies were limited. Reported benefits include efficiency gains, improved access and service quality, user satisfaction, workload reduction, and institutional visibility. Technology practices clustered into four domains: AI/analytics-driven services, infrastructure modernization, resource tracking and security, and mobile-first self-service. Persistent challenges relate to financial constraints, technical expertise, and policy alignment.
Implications: The study recommends a phased integration strategy combining low-cost open-source tools with selective AI and cloud investments supported by staff training and robust data-governance policies.
